The patent indicators presented in this section count the patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Patents issued by the USPTO are particularly interesting because the importance of the U.S. market prompts inventors to file applications for a patent regardless of their nationality. When an invention is patented, the official patent document lists the names and addresses of the inventor(s) and those of the assignee(s). In other words, patents can be counted according to the inventors’ place of residence, in which case we are talking about patented inventions, or according to the assignees’ place of residence, in which case we are talking about patents granted.
